GCSE Geography Residential Trip to the Azores – Easter 2026
During the Easter holidays in 2026, GCSE Geography students took part in an exciting overseas residential trip to the Azores Islands, Portugal. This unique experience was designed to enrich students’ understanding of key topics within the GCSE specification, including tectonic hazards, geothermal energy and distinctive physical landscapes.
Over the course of five days, students explored a wide range of remarkable natural environments. Highlights of the trip included visits to the Furnas geothermal village, Terra Nostra Botanical Gardens and a tea plantation, as well as opportunities to experience geothermal pools. Students also investigated volcanic landscapes at Lagoa do Fogo and Sete Cidades, visited hydroelectric and geothermal power facilities, and explored features such as waterfalls, lava tubes and dramatic coastal formations. The programme was supported by knowledgeable local guides, who helped to bring the geography of the islands to life.
The trip provided an invaluable opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with real-world environments, deepening their understanding while developing independence and confidence. It was a highly successful visit, offering a memorable blend of education and adventure for all those involved.
