Open Minds

Open Minds – recognising the need to challenge our most able students

At King Edward VI School we believe that all students are entitled to educational provision which enables them to develop their full potential and to work at the highest level in line with their ability and interest. We believe that this should take place across all areas of academic achievement and should also be part of their personal and social development. Our Open Minds programme aims to meet the needs of our most able students, just as we make extra provision for students with other special educational needs. The programme provides support and challenging experiences for these students, to ensure that they achieve to the best of their ability.

Within the first term of their school year, Year 7, 8 and 9 Open Minds students will be made aware that they are part of a core group of students who are considered to be the highest achieving students in their year group. These students will be encouraged to meet on a regular basis and will have particular opportunities made available to them in order to stretch and challenge them further and help them achieve at the highest level. Such activities include:

  • History and Archaeology Day, provided by the University of Cambridge
  • Visit to Cambridge University College to give students a flavour of university life
  • Year 10 Challenge Days and College lectures at Cambridge University and the University of East Anglia
  • Opportunity to study Latin and Mandarin
  • Physics of the Ocean day at the University of East Anglia
  • Cambridge University workshop on post-16 subject courses
